Platypus

I recently returned from a trip to Sydney, and was drawn as usual to the fabulous wildlife. Here’s my first attempt at videoing my favorite Australian inhabitant– the duck-billed platypus. When underwater, playpuses (platypi?) close their ears, eyes and nose and navigate by a kind of radar. They are monotremes, which are egg-laying mammals, and are really extraordinary. Wish I could have brought her home!

  1. That is so cool! I wish you could have taken her home, too, so I could see him on my continent. I was suprised when you said that they are small animals. I had always envisioned them as they huge penguin like things in my head. So awesome how she swims so quickly and flips around in the water like a dolphin.

  2. What an amazing little creature. Ever since grade 7, when we studied the animals of Australia in school, they have held for me a fascination. I still hold on to the dream of someday visiting their native land.
